Panama - San Blas Islands - Panama - Central America

Just a 20 minute flight from Panama City takes you to the bautiful San Blas Islands. 378 islands line the Caribbean coastline from the Colon Province almost to the Colombian border. The Kuna Indians have governed this autonomous province since the 1920s. They maintain their own economic system, language, customs and culture with their distinctive dress, music, dance and legends.When you are on the islands, it seems like you have stepped back in time. Men still fish from canoes like they have been doing for centuries. Surrounding you are the many islands of golden sand and enticing blue-green waters of the carribean.

Women wear skirts and true-color blouses decorated on its back and front with the famous molas - the genuine expression of the indian art.
The also wear colored bead ornaments at wrists and ankles. Chains, pectorals, and gold noserings complete their every-day dresses.

There are many activities to keep you busy while visiting the San Blas Islands of Panama. Adventure tourism is proment in the area, you can scuba dive, snorkel or sportfish in the turquise waters of the Carribean sea, or laze out on a hammock in the sun on an uninhabited island.

Daily Flights serve several of the islands so island hopping is a breeze. You are advised to make reservations as the small planes tend to get crowded. Aerotaxi, Aviatur and Ansa serve some islands from Albrook Airport. Traffic between islands is by motorized cuyaco.

Most islands require visitors to pay a registration/visitation fee that varies usually from $3 - $5 and usually the Kuna require a $1 for permission to photograph them. While moving about the islands, away from the beach, it is appreciated by the Kunas that no swimsuits or short shorts are worn, men should not go shirtless.
